Dr. Michael Nettles

Michael T. Nettles is the Senior Research Director of the Policy Evaluation and Research Center in the Research and Development Division at Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, NJ. He is the first Edmund W. Gordon Chair for Policy Evaluation and Research at ETS. He is a prominent national policy researcher on educational assessment, student performance and achievement, educational equity, and higher education finance and accountability policies.


Dr. Nettles’ research in these broad interest areas has been featured in a wide range of academic and popular publications, including:The New York Times,The Wall Street Journal,U.S. News and World Report,The Washington Post,The Chronicle of Higher EducationandEducation Week. He has also testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education, Training and Life Long Learning.


Nettles is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Board on Testing and Assessment (BOTA) and the National Advisory Board for the Center for Research on Educational Standards and Testing (CREST) at UCLA. He is former member and Vice Chairman of the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB), and a former member of the College Board of Trustees. In 1996, Nettles became the first Executive Director of the Fredrick D. Patterson Research Institute of the College Fund. In that role he published the three volumeAfrican American Education Data Bookseries andTwo Decades of Progress. Other past positions include Professor of Education at the University of Michigan, Vice President for Assessment for the University of Tennessee System, Senior Research Scientist at ETS, and Assistant Director for Academic Affairs at the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.


He is a native of Nashville, Tennessee and received his Ph.D. in Higher Education from Iowa State University.
